Part One - Awake

I’m awake now. Darkness is everywhere around me. Darkness is in my mind. There is a constant pain in my head and neck and the strangest feeling that something is not right. Where the heck am I? I can’t see anything, everything is blurry and the pain.... the pain is getting stronger every second. I move my hand, trying to feel anything that could tell me where I am and what I felt, I didn’t like at all. It was a rough cold wall, made of steel I think. I felt like a blind man reading as I was moving my fingers across the wall. But nothing. I was so cold, my clothes were wet, and I felt as if I was sitting in a pool of water. Trying to get up was hard, but I finally managed it. Wait a minute! All those thoughts about my current dungeon and I didn’t notice the most important fact. I was trying to remember where I was, but there was a more important question. Who am I? I can’t remember anything! What happened to me? What is my name?  Where am I?  Nothing. My mind was as empty as a broken bottle. That was too much for me. My legs couldn’t hold me anymore so I fainted.

My eye lids are so heavy. Trying to open my eyes seems like an impossible task. I’ll just keep trying.... Half way my thought I heard footsteps. Then, after a few moments of silence, the small iron door on the other side of the room opened. I saw a tall, dark haired and dark skinned man in a strange uniform standing on the other side of the door. He said something in a language I didn’t understand and then moved his hand gesturing like he wanted me to follow him. My head was still in pain, but I started going toward him. Exit at last! But to where? Where am I going?

As I was leaving the dark room, the tall man grabbed me by my arm and started pushing me forward. I realized that I was on a ship, but how I got here, I didn’t know. We entered a small cabin filled with simple wooden furniture. I saw a small desk and a man sitting behind it. Gray hair, glasses, thin lips and a cigar in his mouth were first things I noticed about him. He looked at me through his large glasses and spoke to me.

"Sit down, please. Sorry for the inconvenience, but you were out of yourself. We couldn’t calm you down, so we had to stun you.  I’m very sorry for that. Let me introduce myself. My name is Inspector Goodridge.  Oh my God, I see your head is bleeding.  You better go to the ambulance and when it is taken care of, we'll continue our little talk. Then you can tell me who are you, and some other things I need for my investigation..."

I had wrongfully judged the inspector when I first saw him. Under his gloomy appearance, I think he was a nice man. What I didn’t like was the fact that he didn’t know who I was. Could I ever get an answer to that question? I’m going crazy just not knowing anything about myself. Wait a minute... he said investigation.... what the hell happened here????

I entered the ambulance and saw a delightful sight. A beautiful, youthful nurse was sitting inside reading some papers. She didn’t notice me when I first entered, so I didn’t want to frighten her.  I just stood there watching her and relaxing my eyes on her pretty face. Then she saw me and spoke to me with a voice, prettier than a nightingale’s song.

"Hi there. I don’t think we met before. My name is Nurse Demidov, and what's yours?"

I just stood there not knowing what to say. There was nothing I would rather do than tell her my name... if only I knew it. She looked at my wound and just whispered to me:

"Don’t worry, it isn't as bad as it looks. I’ll take care of it in a minute. I just need to get some bandages from the storage room. I’ll be right back, you just sit here and wait a little. I don’t want to see a handsome little devil like you fainting because of lost blood."

She smiled and walked out of the room.  She was just the prettiest girl I had ever seen; at least I think so because I couldn’t remember... I sat there waiting for the angel to return when I saw a yellow folder with some papers in it on the desk. I opened it and saw some mixed up data inside. When I looked closer I realised that it was data about some passengers on a ship. But it was all messed up; names, occupations, medical data... everything was in a mess. I started reading through the pages, and soon I came across one paper on which was written '' scar on right arm.'' I felt something in my chest.  My heart had started beating faster and harder. I looked at my right arm and I saw a large scar that I hadn't seen before. How did I get it? It didn’t hurt so it had to be an old scar. It was then that I had an idea. If I could sort the medical data, maybe I could find out who I was. As I started to look more through the papers, the nurse came back and smiled.  She said:

"I’ve been trying to sort that for hours now but I can’t. That was a list of all our passengers but most of them disappeared a few nights ago. I don’t know why, but they are gone. There are only 6 of them left, but it is all a mess. I wrote some details down earlier, so if you want to have a look through and sort it out, it’s ok by me. You can do it while I’m taking care of your wound."

She smiled again and then gave me the paper with a list written on it. And I started..... Could it tell me who I am?  I didn’t know, but I just prayed for a little light into my dark and blurry past.....

No matter how good it gets,
It will get worse.
But no matter how bad it gets,
it will always get better.
